COMPANY
BACKGROUND
The founding entity for the present company was a family owned
outfit, which started bauxite
mining in the area in 1953-54 and continued thereafter.
In
1974, the outfit was reconstituted into a partnership firm
with the name M/s Saurashtra Calcine
Bauxite & Allied Industries, whereby along with continuing
to mine bauxite, the company also
entered the production of calcined bauxite.
Our
company was further incorporated as Public Limited, Joint
Stock, Company, having the current
name M/s Saurashtra Calcine Bauxite & Allied Industries
Limited (SCABAL), on 27th March, 1997.
The
company, as such, has been involved in the activity of mining
bauxite, manufacturing calcined
bauxite and marketing in India and outside. We were exporting
metal grade bauxite, between 1965
and 1979, to Japan, UK and Canada. We also supplied cargos
to other exporters, who exported the
same on their own name.
There
has not been any significant change in the management activities
and business of the company
during the above two transformations - from family owned outfit
to a partnership firm and then to a
Public Limited - Joint Stock Company.

status. When needed they can easily raise finance from their
own resources as well as public resources - bank etc. It has
been a regular practice of the company to invest Rs. 15 to
20 million (US $ 0.3 to 3 million ) in upgrading its capabilities.
EXPORT
PERFORMANCE
The
Company has a long experience in exporting bauxite. In our
first family owned outfit, we exported metal grade bauxite
to Japan, Canada and U.K. between 1965 and 1974. It Continued
to export from 1974 onward under the new partnership company.
This activity was put to halt in 1979, when the Govt. canalised
export of bauxite above 54% Al2O3 . The company curtailed
its bauxite export activity and concentrated on producing
calcined bauxite for local consumption, in However, we also
supplied cargoes to some other local exporters, who used to
export the same in various grades.
We re-commissioned our direct exports in May, 1998 and since
then, up to present, have affected 40 shipments, amounting
to 13,52,000 MT, to various destinations in Japan, China,
Ukraine and UAE (Mid East), France etc. in our own name.
During
this short period of four years the company has established
itself as a dependable and quality conscious supplier of Metal
grade and Cement grade bauxite and Calcined Bauxite. Our consistent
performance has own us the CHAPEXIL (Chemical and Allied Export
Promotion Council, Govt. of India) Awards for 'Top Bauxite
Exporter', during 1998-1999 and the same honor is for subsequent
three years. We are maintaining this position in 2003 also.

BAUXITE
- GENERAL/ GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND
Gujarat
State is one of the three major bauxite bearing and producing
areas in India. It produces around 17-18% of total bauxite
production in India (around 6.0 Million Tons), amounting to
1.0 to 1.2 million tons every year.
Main
deposits are concerned in districts of Kutch and Jamnagar,
through, several other occurrences are also located in various
parts of the state.
Bauxite
deposits are confirmed to the upper horizons of the Paleocene
lateritic profiles and occur in the form of regular pockets,
with varying grades. According to the Gujarat State Govt.,
Directorate of Geology and Mining Surveys around 150 million
Tons of indicated bauxite reserves have been declared, but
the reserves could be much higher if all the bauxite bearing
areas are proposed.
Though
the bauxite mining for local consumption had started during
the mid. 1930s, mining for exports started only in 1955. Since
then various grades of bauxite have been exported out of the
state. During early 1960s to late 1970s Metallurgical grade
bauxite was exported to U.K., Italy, Switzerland and Japan.
Thereafter cement grade bauxite has been also regularly shipped
to Mid-East, Occasional shipments have gone to U.S.A. also,
Since 1996 onwards Metallurgical grade bauxite has again been
exported to East European countries and Japan. These exports
are on increase now and M/s SCABAL are emerging as one of
the leading exporters.

BAUXITE MINING LEASE HOLDING WITH US
We
hold '28' lease hold areas amounting to to 163.35 hectares,
mostly in Kalyanpur Taluka of Jamnagar Dist., Gujarat State.
Out of these 28 leases- 5 are being currently operated for
bauxite production. In addition, their sister concern, Raghuvanshi
Refractories has '2' bauxite leads holds amounting to 60 hectares,
which are also currently operated by SCABAL.
Further
they are operating on contract basis one mine each of M/s
Saurashtra Cement Ltd. (32.4 hectares) and M/s Shreeji Minerals
(86.2 hectares).
Over
and above M/s SCABAL have recently acquired another 60 acres
bauxite bearing land in the same area, for which mining lease
is being obtained from the Govt.

QUALITY
OF BAUXITE
Quality
wise the grade vary from low to high grade alumina, low
sillica
and low calcium oxide. The main grades produced based on AI2O3
content include :
<
50%, 50 - 56% and > 56%
Mineralogical
tests have indicated that the bauxite of this area is primarily
Gibbsite or Trihydrate type. The above combination is highly suitable for metallurgical purposes.

COMMUNICATION AND ACCESSIBILITY
All
the bauxite mining locations are connected and accessible
with the major state highways within 8 to 10 KM distance.
through all weather motorable roads, round the year.
A broad gauge railway line, connecting Okha port and Jamnagar,
passes within 20 - 25 KM from this area.
All the locations are approximately 100 KM away from both
regular bauxite exporting port - Okha and Porbandar respectively.
Bauxite cargo is moved by trucks / dumpers.
Due to convenience of operation M/s SCABAL have so far been
making their shipments from Okha port only.

POST
SALE INTERACTION WITH BUYERS / USERS:
It
is our regular practice to interact with buyers / users once
the shipments made. We have a
commendable record of satisfying our buyers / users by attending

in getting the repeat orders from the same buyers. Some of
the examples of complaint resolutions and suggestion incorporations
are as follows:
At
the suggestions of one of our prestigious Japanese buyers,
we have upgraded our crushing and screening plants by introducing
vibrating screens and to enhance production capacity installed
additional crushing / screening units.
We have also installed bauxite beneficiation plant to remove
excess fines and dust and improve the grade too.
This
will also take care of environmental problems due to dust
at the discharge ports.
Introduced environmental pollution control-to-control dust
and noise pollution at various sites.
